STAYING AT THE BELMOND HOTEL MONASTERIO

Located just a 5 min walk from the main plaza of Cusco, the Belmond Hotel Monasterio combines centuries-old charm with new world luxuries. Built in 1592, the monastery is a stunning example of 16th century architecture in Peru and boasts several arched courtyards, an original chapel with period details, and its own art collection. Stepping off the lively streets of Cusco and entering the hotel, one feels a sense of tranquility and calm. The Hotel Monasterio is the perfect oasis to spend a few days in the heart of Cusco.

Checking into the hotel, you are immediately greeted by a friendly staff member and offered a cup of coca tea whilst you sit in the hotel's lobby bar, complete with soaring ceilings, a massive stone fireplace, and 16th century artworks. We were quickly notified that we had received a complimentary upgrade to a Junior Suite, a pleasant surprise to start the trip.

Opening the door to the room, you are overcome by a feeling of homey coziness. The room is colorful with vaulted ceilings and plenty of natural light. The furnishings are varied, fit with the style of the building, and appear (and are) incredibly comfortable, especially the bed. Looking out the window offers lovely views of the surrounding hills and tiled rooftops. The room as a whole imbues comfort and invites you to stay awhile.

The hotel has a more casual restaurant where breakfast (included) and lunch are offered, as well as a higher end restaurant for dinners. The breakfast spread is plentiful, with fresh breads & pastries, fruit, meats & cheeses, vegan & gluten free options, hot food items, and a selection of juices. You can also order eggs (prepared in the method of your choosing), omelettes, and pancakes as part of the breakfast service.

The staff is friendly and ready to help with anything you might need, including making reservations, booking tours, and offering suggestions of things to do. Spa services are available on the property, but we opted to explore the larger spa at the adjacent Belmond Palacio Nazarenas property after our Inca Trail Hike (another beautiful property I want to explore some day).

The hotel held our luggage during our four day hike, and upon our return was waiting for us in our new room, this time a double upgrade to the Presidential Suite. I would happily return to the Belmond Hotel Monasterio again for another dose of luxury and relaxation.

TIPS

1| Book via the Luxury Hotels Collection if you have a participating credit card (ie Chase Sapphire Reserve). Here, you will find discounted rates when available, and perks such as early check-in/late check-out, complimentary room upgrades, spa credits, and more. I booked via this portal and got a great deal plus complimentary upgrades with both stays.

2| Make sure to allow the evening turn down service for some extra treats.

3| Although the breakfasts are great, I would avoid having lunch & dinner at the hotel as there are better options throughout Cusco.
