Although not required, the japan rail pass will save you time and money! The pass is super easy to activate and use. You can reserve seats for free too! 

Suica & pasmo cards are prepaid IC cards that can be used on public transport in Tokyo & Kyoto. They can be purchased in Tokyo Station or other subway stations throughout the city.

 

KYOTO

Fly to Tokyo, it usually makes sense to stay one night before hopping on a train at Tokyo Station to Kyoto. Remember to activate your Japan Rail pass at the JR office in Tokyo Station (you can secure seat assignments for all your trains or just the first leg at this time as well)
