Suica & pasmo cards are prepaid IC cards that can be used on public transport in Tokyo & Kyoto. They can be purchased in Tokyo Station or other subway stations throughout the city.

Fly to Tokyo, it usually makes sense to stay one night before hopping on a train at Tokyo Station to Kyoto. Remember to activate your Japan Rail pass at the JR office in Tokyo Station (you can secure seat assignments for all your trains or just the first leg at this time as well)
